St Kilda’s iconic Esplanade Hotel has been recognised on the world stage for its architecture and interior design.
The 141-year-old building has been shortlisted for the best Australian and Pacific Bar as part of the London-based 2019 Restaurant and Bar Design Awards.
Another St Kilda hot spot, the Village Belle Hotel, is also among the 17 bars nominated.
The designers behind both St Kilda venues is Techne Architecture and Interior Design.
Justin Northrop, director at Techne said it was huge to have two heritage-focused hospitality venues from St Kilda shortlisted.
“As both projects are located in St Kilda, it shows how the area is regaining recognition for the design of its food and beverage offerings,” he said.
Mr Northrop said the idea behind the Esplanade’s redevelopment after it closed in 2015 was to play homage to the hotel’s colour past across the different eras.
The Espy was also nominated for best Heritage Building.

“Recognising and appreciating the venue’s story has been at the core of our design for The Espy,” he said.
“Each of The Espy’s spaces needed to have its own identity yet integrate with the venue as a whole.
“The renovation was not without challenges given it is a Victorian-era building, but the history, character and multiple uses of the venue have acted as the inspiration behind the eclectic and layered outcome.”
Winners will be announced at a London awards ceremony on October 3.
