A DANGEROUS Malvern crossing will receive a $1.11 million safety boost.
The State Government has allocated the money to the pedestrian crossing in Tooronga Rd, near Tooronga train station, to replace the existing flashing zebra crossing with pedestrian-operated lights.
Malvern state Liberal MP and treasurer Michael O’Brien said the new pedestrian-operated lights would allow people of all ages to cross Tooronga Rd at their own pace and “in a much safer environment”.
Works will start in 2015 and will also include linking the pedestrian lights with the railway level crossing, and the installation of road traffic detectors to manage traffic flow.
Mr O’Brien said the project would build on works already done, including automatic safety gates, emergency exit buttons, fencing and signage.
