“Fresh is best” is a longtime mantra at The Langham, Melbourne.

The hotel’s award-winning Melba Restaurant has taken things up a notch, launching a commitment to “local wherever possible” through its Season’s Harvest campaign.

The Langham Melbourne’s executive chef Deepak Mishra said they were “thrilled to announce that 70 per cent of produce served at Melba Restaurant is from Victoria”.

“From basil from a farm in Bendigo to tuna that swum off the shores of Portland, to honey from Beechworth, to cheese made just 45 minutes away in the Yarra Valley,” Mr Mishra said,

The Langham Melbourne’s managing director Andrew Jessop said the initiative was ”the perfect platform” to showcase Victorian produce to “astute diners from around the globe” including 25,000 overseas visitors in 2018.

“In 2018 Melba Restaurant served over 200,000 meals,” Mr Jessop said.

“We felt that it’s time to share with our guests where our ingredients come from.

“Our chefs have enjoyed meeting with local farmers, fishermen, cheesemakers and bakers and finding ways we can work together.”

“If a respected venue like Melba Restaurant is paying such close attention to where their ingredients come from and investing in sharing those stories with their customers it’s really exciting for growers,” Mr Hawkes said.

“It shows that people really do want to know where their food comes from and how it gets to their plate.”

Education is important at Hawkes Farm, with the property hosting school tours and holding regular open days.

There is also a farm gate open daily from 8am-5pm and the chance for customers to pick their own produce.

“As well as our own produce we sell fruit and veg from other growers in the region,” Mr Hawkes said.
