The first David Jones stand-alone food store throws open its doors at Capitol Grand, South yarra tomorrow morning.

The 425 square-metre store, corner of Toorak Rd and Chapel St, will be what DJs describes as “a reimagining of the modern corner shop marrying convenience with the highest quality produce and everyday goods”.

It will be the first retailer to open in the luxury development and as well as fresh-prepared meals and produce, it will also sell plants.

DJs’ managing director of food, Pieter de Wet, said it was a significant moment for the business.

“As our first stand-alone food store, a great deal of research and planning has gone into this project; understanding how we can make our customers’ lives easier by delivering an exceptional range of convenient meal options without compromising on flavour or quality,” he said.

“We are so excited to be joining the South Yarra community and want our customers to see us as their pantry, their home on the way home for delicious meal options, the highest quality produce, and the best food brands from Australia around the world.”

The store is designed to cater to busy locals with an emphasis on fresh premium produce, including prepacked meat and seafood and a convenience section with pre-prepared vegetables, salads and fruit, as well as premium ready meals.

Most products will carry the new David Jones Food label, which was launched earlier this year.

The stand-alone food store is the latest concept to be announced as part of David Jones’ rollout of its premium food offering, which began with the opening of a flagship Food Hall at its Bondi Junction store in Sydney and as news.com.au reported just weeks ago, David Jones is also bringing its food hall experience to service stations across the country.

The retailer plans to open several stand-alone food stores in the coming years.

The $800 million Capitol Grand has been billed as Mebourne’s six-star address. The 50-storey residential apartment complex has been built on the site of the old Capitol Bakery.

David Jones Capitol Grand will officially open at 9am on October 17 with a ribbon cutting by ambassador Jessica Gomes and David Jones Managing Director of Food, Pieter de Wet. There will be free coffee, a gifting wall and an interactive sampling wall.
