A top surgeon performed surgery days after saying he would take leave while under investigation by the health regulator for tearing down and stomping on a Teal MP Monique Ryan campaign sign.

Professor Gregory Malham performed a spinal surgery at the Epworth Hospital in Richmond on Tuesday after it was announced he would be taking leave while under investigation over a shocking video of him that was released on social media.

Epworth HealthCare told the Herald Sun that the surgery performed by Prof Malham was a necessary surgery that was partly completed, and Prof Malham had been specifically requested by the patient.

The hospital confirmed that he was on leave from Tuesday and will remain so until the investigation is done.

“Epworth always prioritises patient safety and medical care and therefore agreed to the patient and surgeon’s request to complete the second part of a complex staged spinal surgery on Tuesday,” an Epworth spokesperson said.

“The patient was fully advised and asked that Prof. Greg Malham perform this important second part of a surgery at its scheduled time.

“Prof Malham has formally taken leave while the independent investigation continues into his social media video.”

The video showed Prof Malham praising US President Donald Trump after tearing down the Kooyong MP’s corflute before bundling it into the boot of a car and addressing “the boys”.

In a second scene at another location, the surgeon removed the sign from the car’s boot and stomped on it before he threw it into a rubbish skip.

“Just finishing the job, boys. Always gotta bury the body,” he said.

“Just remember these tutorials. It is all about technique, Nigel. Always remember guys, good technique, then dispose of the evidence.

Prof Malham, who is recognised as one of Australia’s premier spine surgeons, announced on Saturday he would be self-reporting to the Australia Health Practitioners Regulator Authority (AHPRA).

On Easter Saturday, Epworth HealthCare Group chief executive Professor Andrew Stripp confirmed Epworth would also do its own independent investigation via a statement.

“Epworth and Prof. Malham agree is it appropriate he take leave while the investigation is under way and he has advised Epworth he has self-reported to the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency and will be fully accountable for his behaviour,” Professor Stripp said.
