Students will no longer be packed in library for lessons thanks to purpose-built building at South Yarra Primary School
A popular South Yarra school which has been forced to use its library as a classroom will be able to ease cramped conditions thanks to a new three-storey building. And there will be no waiting around to use it — it will ready to go for the first day of school.

Students at a Stonnington primary school who have had to cram into the library and other rooms as makeshift classrooms will enjoy having a new building house them upon return to school next week.
South Yarra Primary School has been full to the brim for years, but the three-storey permanent modular building will single-handedly house about 200 students at the Punt Rd site.
School council vice president Emily Keon-Cohen said the school community was “very pleased that the government has acted on parents’ concerns about our school bursting at the seams”.
“After years of severe overcrowding and inadequate space which resulted in the library and multipurpose rooms being forced into use as classrooms, the new building will ensure our current students can be better accommodated,” she said.
“The building is amazing. It certainly looks fantastic and the children are really looking forward to getting in there.”
The building, part of a $6 million State Government project to upgrade the school, includes 12 general purpose classrooms, sliding internal walls and an elevator.
Work included demolishing one block, while the new Punt Rd carpark, including accessible carparking spaces, is yet to be completed.

The modular building, which has a comparable lifespan to brick and mortar structures, was built offsite to minimise disruption at the school.
Work started on the building in August and was completed and received an occupancy certificate on January 16.
