MEDIA commitments could dictate whether former Hawthorn premiership player Brad Sewell pulls on the boots for Victorian Amateur Football Association club University Blues in 2015.
Sewell has been linked with a move to this year’s Premier B champions, in what would be a significant coup for the club ahead of their return to the VAFA’s top tier.
Uni Blues coach Quinton Gleeson confirmed the club had spoken to Sewell after his retirement following 200 games in the brown and gold.
But he said a lot needed to fall into place for the club to secure the 30-year-old.
“We’ve had a chat to Sewelly and I know him quite well,” Gleeson said.
“He’s clearly got to work out in his head, what he’s going to be doing next year and what his media commitments are going to be.”
Sewell appeared on Channel Seven this year during his final year at the Hawks.
When asked to put a percentage of Uni Blues’ chances of signing the rugged midfielder, Gleeson said: “At this stage you can’t really, because he hasn’t even worked out what he’s going to do media wise.
“Whether he can play one game, six games, 12 games or nought games, it really depends on what role he takes within the media.
“I know he’s well sought-after throughout the industry because of who he is and what he has been able to achieve.
“I think as a result of that he’s got to start putting a line through things in his own mind before we can even start having that discussion.”
Meanwhile, several Uni Blues players have been training with Victorian Football League club Richmond over the off-season.
“They’re all pretty motivated after a great year last year,” Gleeson said.
“One of the other great things that is in our favour at the moment is we’ve got up to eight blokes training at a VFL club.
“That’s keeping those blokes motivated, but it ripples down to the other guys as well.”
Uni Blues will start 2015 with an away fixture against De La Salle, before unveiling its premiership flag at home in Round 2 when it tackles Beaumaris.
