He came on and “turned the game on its head”.

15-year-old Sam Duckett, on third XI debut for Oakleigh, was thrown the ball in the 24th over with the game in the balance.

The paceman ripped the game to shreds, taking a breathtaking 5-1 off four overs.

He jagged two wickets in his first over, one in his second and another two in his third all for no expense.

Croydon, previously cruising, was brought to its knees by the youngster in his 16th game of senior cricket.

Oaks captain Rob Howes said it was “an unbelievable spell” from Duckett, who was inches away from having 6-0 during his fourth over.

“We were only defending 130, I think Croydon were three for 50 odd and as a result of Sam’s spell they lost 7-12 in the end,” Howes said.

“At one point he had 5-0 and the one run was chipped over mid-wicket just out of reach, it very easily could have been six-for.

“He bowled sharp, tailed in the 24-over old ball and absolutely destroyed their middle order.

“I had played with a lot of the other guys or at least seen them and he was the one guy I hadn’t seen before, so I had no idea what he bowled.

“I brought him on after drinks thinking I would give him a chance and I guarantee you he won’t be playing threes for much longer based on what I saw, he’s going to be a handful.”

Duckett was one of just three younger players in an experienced Oaks side.

Howes said the Oaks were working at getting something out of Duckett and were “jumping all over him” when they did.

“He looked like he was in shock as each wicket fell, I think we were more excited than he was,” he said.

“We were jumping all over him and I think he was a bit shocked by it all, I don’t think the spell would have sunk in until he got home that night.

“A lot of bowlers can only dream of those figures throughout their whole career, let alone at 15.

“He (Duckett) was one of three youngsters and we were joking around in the field for the first 15 overs trying to get something out of him.

“But he certainly did his talking with the ball when he came on, that’s for sure.”

As for the missed chance at mid-wicket, Howes thinks Duckett is “definitely” owed a can of coke.

“Absolutely, we were joking that he didn’t get off the ground,” he joked.
