The odds were stacked against Old Scotch’s Matthew Seed when he started his approach toward goal late in the final term.

His side had led Old Brighton all day but had wasted numerous chances to put the game beyond doubt.

With just minutes left, Scotch held a three-point advantage and, in one of their few forays forward, Seed took a mark up against the fence in the pocket.

With the Brighton Beach Oval breeze squarely in Seed’s face, Old Scotch co-coach Stuart Powell felt he had little chance.

“It was panic stations in those last few minutes,” he said “They were coming at us very hard and when he took that mark we were just expecting him to eat up a bit of the clock because it was an impossible kick.

“It was quite ironic really, we’d missed simple shots throughout the game and then on the wrong side for a right-footer against the breeze he slotted it.

“It was a remarkable kick.”

The goal would prove to be the final score of the match as the visitors held off Old Brighton’s advances to win, 8.16 (64) to 7.13 (55).

Old Scotch led at every change but Powell said they should have kicked more goals earlier in the game despite the strong winds.

“The boys were happy after the game, they probably know they didn’t play their best footy but it’s still a win that gets them closer to finals,” he said.

In Premier B, University Blues beat St Kevins, 22.13 (145) to 14.9 (93), while Old Camberwell defeated Peninsula 15.18 (108) to 13.13 (91) in Premier C.

In Division 2, Kew destroyed Glen Eira, 22.16 (148) to 3.8 (26), and St Mary’s Salesian was too good for Old Eltham Collegians, 16.16 (112) to 7.12 (54).

In Division 3, Swinburne Uni got over St Francis Xavier, 12.13 (85) to 8.10 (58), and in Division 4 Hawthorn beat Canterbury, 19.5 (119) to 13.9 (87).
