Hawthorn has done no harm to its premiership favourite tag with an impressive 79-point win over West Brunswick in the top-of-the-table Division 4 clash at Rathmines Road Reserve on Saturday.
Both went into the clash undefeated and, for three quarters, the game lived up to expectations of a tight, in and under contest.
Hawthorn held a 25-point lead at the final change.
However, the Hawks showed off their amazing firepower in the final quarter, kicking nine goals to one to take the win and outright first place, 22.15 (147) to 10.8 (68).
Midfielder Sam Gold was forced was forced forward, but he thrived and kicked a match-winning 10 goals.
League-leading goalkicker Jason Ince also chimed in with six goals.
Hawks’ coach Luke Mather said that his side’s ability to execute the game plan when under pressure and the willingness to win the contested ball were the most pleasing aspects of the win.
“It’s been a pretty awesome start to the year,” Mather said.
“It was a massive test for us yesterday – we knew we were a good side but until you come against a top side like them you never know how good you really are.
“The last three weeks against Manningham, Canterbury and now West Brunswick we’ve really strung four quarters together.”
Also in Division 4, Canterbury claimed its fourth win in five games when it defeated North Brunswick by 69 points, 22.12 (144) to 11.9 (75).
In Premier this week, Old Scotch was defeated by Beaumaris at Banksia Reserve, 21.11 (137) to 13.12 (90) despite holding the lead at half-time.
A nine-goal second term helped Mazenod claim an impressive 21.12 (138) to 18.3 (111) victory over St Kevins at T.H. King Oval in Premier B.
Old Camberwell was too strong for Peninsula in Premier C, winning 18.20 (128) to 12.14 (86).
In Division 2, Kew remains undefeated this season, following an 18.16 (124) to 3.10 (28) thumping of the lowly Glen Eira.
St Mary’s Salesian beat St Johns, 24.12 (156) to 12.9 (81).
In Division 3, an eight-goal first quarter, and seven goals to Jackson Manning, helped Swinburne Uni to a 19.11 (125) to 14.16 (100) win against Richmond Central.
