Men in Melbourne’s inner east have bucked Victoria’s unemployment trends, with less of them unemployed than at the same time 12 months ago.

The unemployment rate in Melbourne’s inner east has risen by almost one per cent in the year to August — 5.15 per cent, compared with 4.21 per cent for the same period last year.

The figures are worse for women in the area, with the female unemployment rate jumping from 2.8 per cent to five per cent in the same time frame.

However, there was a slight decrease in the inner east male unemployment rate, which dropped from 5.48 per cent to 5.24 per cent within 12 months.

Plan B recruitment owner John Brownell said his South Yarra-based company, which specialised in white collar and business support roles, had some applicants over-qualified and going to desperate lengths for some positions, including out-of-work lawyers applying for administration jobs.

Mr Brownell said he had received five times the number of applicants for some positions.

“Normally, for administrative roles, I get about 80 applicants for that, and now I’m getting 280,” he said.

“People are over-qualified, you have lawyers applying for administration roles and it’s a mismatch.”

Mr Brownell encouraged applicants to not “blanket apply for everything” and to still take the time to carefully apply for positions.

According to Adzuna, there were 927 positions up for grabs in South Yarra as of Sunday, October 11.

However, 726 positions were in an “unknown” category, and many had the location listed as ‘Melbourne’ despite being included in South Yarra’s total.

Adzuna had 2434 jobs listed in the Melbourne CBD area, while West Melbourne (245), Middle Park (150) and Clayton (133) rounded out the top five.

The industries with the most openings in South Yarra included property (48 positions), legal (45), engineering (26) and trades and construction (26).

As of August 2020, there was 3500 people in Melbourne’s inner east who had been unemployed for 13 weeks or less, compared with 4000 people in August 2019.

Across the country the number of people out of work almost doubled from 237,000 to 465,000 people in August.

The number of Victorians looking for a job rose 67 per cent to 130,000 people.

New South Wales was the only state to record a larger increase in unemployment than Victoria.

There, the number of jobless people rose 88 per cent to 149,000 people in the year to August.
