Shops at Chaddy’s new Atrium food court apply for liquor licences

THE countdown is on to Christmas, but food and beverage outlets at Chadstone shopping centre aren’t sure whether they will be able to raise a glass or not, with Stonnington Council delaying a crucial licencing decision.

BOOZE could be served at Chadstone’s revamped Atrium food court if Stonnington Council signs off on liquor licences for eight shop owners.

If approved, the outlets will be able to serve alcohol between 11am and 1am, Monday to Sunday, at the newly renovated food court, popular with families and young teenagers.

The food court, which is being expanded and is due to open next month, will add to the centre’s vast food offerings, which include three additional food courts and the $17 million West Piazza dining precinct currently under construction.

Council officers noted in a report to council last week that 35 premises within the centre already held liquor licences and the applications should be approved.

“The proposed licensed restaurants/cafes are within the area designated for allowable uses as shown on the approved incorporated plan. Allowable uses including shop, and food and drink premises,” they wrote.

“The service of liquor is a function which is part and parcel of a food and drink premises.”

But Stonnington Council last week deferred making a decision, with Cr Sally Davis asking for more time to review the applications.

A decision on the matter is expected to be made at the council’s next public meeting held at Malvern Town Hall on November 19.

Chadstone general manager Fiona Mackenzie said Gami Chicken, Little White Duck and Sushi Jiro would be among the new food offerings at the refurbished Atrium food court.

“The redevelopment is one of several projects underway at Chadstone, opening in time for Christmas,” she said.

“There are several applications with (the) council for consideration, including liquor licences, and we will provide an update on those applications in coming weeks.”
