Long-awaited Prahran Square to open in December

A long-awaited multimillion-dollar urban parkland precinct in Prahran, hailed as the answer to Chapel St’s woes and featuring sprawling lawns, digital art, sensory gardens and food and retail outlets, finally has a launch date. SEE THE PICTURES

The long-anticipated multimillion-dollar Prahran Square precinct is nearing completion, with its grand opening set to feature music, arts and events.

The $60 million project, which includes more than 9000sq m of open space and two levels of underground parking, will open on Sunday, December 1 at 11am.

The Leader was given an exclusive tour of the urban parkland, which features a 1000sq m lawn, digital interactive artwork from internationally renowned Bruce Ramus, planter boxes and a sensory garden. It also includes an accessible forest walk on the Izett St frontage, established trees, and living art installations by Australian artist, Jamie North.

There will also be terraced seating and food and retail outlets.

“It delivers on our community’s expectations for high quality open space,” Cr Stefanopoulos said.

“The Prahran Square Summer Series is a fabulous showcase of live music, arts, health and wellbeing sessions, I encourage everyone to join me on December 1 to celebrate the opening of this fabulous space.”

“This project will put our iconic Chapel Street precinct squarely on the map as the premiere

destination for Melbourne shoppers and tourists.”

Chapel Street Precinct Association general manager Chrissie Maus said the association was planning world-class events for the precinct and hoped the council extended its $1 for two-hour parking offer beyond December 31.
