Leadfoot drivers flout permanent 40km/h speed zone in Camberwell Junction

Police are cracking down on drivers thumbing their nose at a 40km/h speed zone in Camberwell Junction, with six drivers booked in less than half an hour during a recent sting. And they have a theory as to why motorists are still pushing the limit.

Leadfoot drivers flouting the permanent 40km/h zone in Camberwell Junction are being warned to check their speed or risk being fined.

Six drivers were booked in less than half an hour during a recent police sting at the junction, and Nunawading highway patrol Acting Sergeant Melville said there was “no excuse” for speeding.

The 24-hour 40km/h zone was introduced by VicRoads last year as part of the TAC’s Towards Zero safety campaign, and Acting Sgt Melville said drivers risked causing serious injuries to pedestrians if they ignored the road rules.

The 40km/h zone takes in sections of all roads leading in and out of the junction.

Previously motorists were able to do 60km/h through the precinct, and while he said many drivers had adjusted their speed, too many ignored the new rules, possibly out of habit.

“Speed limits are put in place for a reason. In heavily populated areas they aid in increasing the safety of vulnerable road users such as cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists,” he said.

The 40km/h zones are increasingly being rolled out in precincts with high pedestrian activity such as the busy Camberwell Junction retail hub.

Operation Furlong ran over the Melbourne Cup weekend with 106 driving offences detected in Boroondara, including three drivers nabbed for drink driving.

Marked and unmarked police cars would also continue to patrol the Camberwell Junction area, Acting Sgt Melville said.
