Anna and Victoria Duncan’s love for their grandfather has never waived, even when rocked by the terrible news he was suffering from Alzheimer’s.
“It’s sad. He’s still fun in ways, but he can’t do much and it makes me sad,” Victoria said.
“I love that he’s still funny and that he’s fun to play with, and that he still gives us lollies,” Anna said.
Geoff Duncan was diagnosed in 2014 and although he can recognise family faces, his short-term memory and speech have been severely affected.
That’s why twins Anna and Victoria, 8, will join mum Louise in the Dementia Australia Memory Walk and Jog on May 5.
So far, the Kew East family has raised $2510 for Dementia Australia, which Louise said had provided support and resources since her father’s diagnosis.
“(The) resources they’ve got have been really invaluable,” Louise said.
“We were a bit slow off the mark accepting (Dad’s diagnosis) but the earlier and more aware you are of the support and services on offer the better you’ll be.”
Dementia Australia chief executive Maree McCabe said the family-friendly event was vital for raising much-needed funds and awareness.
