A MAN has been arrested and charged after he savagely kicked a guide dog pup in the belly on Chapel Street – and now faces jail time or fines of up to $19,000.

A MAN faces jail and/or fines of up to $19,000 after he savagely kicked a guide dog pup in the belly.

The 44-year-old, from Malvern East, allegedly kicked the 12-month-old pooch in the belly “with considerable force”, causing it to yelp and whimper during the shock incident in Prahran yesterday afternoon.

The dog and its handler were waiting outside a shop on Chapel St when the horrific attack occurred.

Police have arrested and charged the man with animal cruelty offences.

He has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on July 9.

The puppy was taken to the vet for assessment.

Maximum penalties for animal cruelty offences include up to a year in jail or fines of up to $19,000.
