Glenn Maxwell will make his long-awaited return to cricket after being named for Victorian Premier Cricket club Fitzroy Doncaster.
Maxwell – who suffered a nasty broken leg while at a 50th birthday party in November – will return to the Lions side mid-week in a two-day match against Kingston Hawthorn.
The Lions are currently 2-18 in pursuit of the Hawks’ 215.
Maxwell’s most recent match for Fitzroy Doncaster was in January 2022, where he carved out a swashbuckling 122 from just 90 balls against Geelong.
His other match for the Lions that season was in a T20 where he also made a century, a dazzling 125 not out off just 61 deliveries with nine sixes.
Maxwell’s return to Victorian Premier Cricket comes just three weeks after Will Pucovski’s return for Melbourne.
“It’s terrific to see him recover and get back to playing, it’s always a positive to see him back playing for his club, I know how keen he always is to go back and play for his club,” Cricket Victoria general manager Graham Manou said.
“Hopefully he can get away on the weekend and make the most of the opportunity.
“Knowing Glenn he will try to fit in as many as he can (games), but we’re hopeful that he gets through Premier Cricket and then we can pick him in the remaining matches for Victoria.
“It’s a shame, the timing of the injury, we’re obviously looking to support his run at the Indian Test series, but hopefully we can get enough cricket into him and he puts his best foot forward for selection in the near future.”
After playing for Fitzroy Doncaster, Maxwell will then suit up for Victoria in his first Sheffield Shield match in three-and-a-half years on Monday.
