Inner east beer lovers are set to get a new drinking hole this summer as an independent brewer realises its venue dream following a four-year fight.
Deeds Brewing has started work on a 150-capacity taphouse at its Paran Place headquarters after the plans were ticked off by Stonnington Council.
The Glen Iris brewery — which began selling hand sanitiser in cans earlier this year — first pitched its bar idea four years ago but was rejected by the council and VCAT.
The brewery submitted revised plans with a reduced capacity late last year and was backed by beer lovers with a 1740-signature petition when it presented to the council in April.
Co-founder Patrick Ale said the brewery was relieved to be issued its permit last month and had completed minor works so far.
“It’s really exciting, it’s been such a long process and its such an important part of our brand to have a place where people can come and taste our beers,” he said.
“Traditionally it (Glen Iris) is a bit of a dry suburb … there isn’t really anything around here like this.”
Mr Ale said his team hoped to open the taphouse sometime in summer and were focused on creating a family friendly and comfortable venue for the community to enjoy.
“They were really the backbone of the support getting this over the line, so we want to make sure locals feel the love when they come down and visit us,” he said.
