UPDATE: Christian activist protesters occupying federal Liberal MP Josh Frydenberg’s Camberwell office say they would rather be arrested than back down on their demand that all children be released from detention in Australia.

The seven Love Makes a Way protesters sitting in Mr Frydenberg’s office have been warned they will be arrested if they do not leave by 5.30pm.

But group spokesman Simon Reeves said the protesters would not leave until Mr Frydenberg accepts their demands.

Mr Reeves said bedding and sleeping bags were being organised for the protesters to settle in for the night.

Earlier today

A CHRISTIAN activist group calling for the release of all children from Australian detention centres is staging a sit-in protest at Kooyong federal Liberal MP Josh Frydenberg’s Camberwell office.

Seven protesters are currently sitting in the Burke Rd office, with up to 20 more picketing the front of the building.

The protesters, from Christian activist group Love Makes a Way, are calling on Mr Frydenberg — the Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Tony Abbott — to speak Mr Abbott about releasing all children from Australian detention.

Group spokesman Simon Reeves said the group welcomed today’s news that some children would be released from detention, but said protests would continue until all children were released.

“The group is asking for a timetable commitment for the release of all children, not just the ones who have been released today, but all children,” Mr Reeves said.

“They’re going to stay in Mr Frydenberg’s office until that request is met,” he said.

The group welcomed today’s news that hundreds of children held in immigration detention on the Australian mainland would be released into the community, as reported by The Herald Sun.

Similar protests have been held in the offices of Mr Abbott, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and Federal Immigration Minister Scott Morrison.

Mr Frydenberg has been contacted for comment.
