Camberwell Anytime Fitness gym plays expletive-laden Kanye West song on outside speaker

A woman in Melbourne’s leafy inner east was so appalled by a gym blasting a Kanye West song containing dozens of “f---” words on a busy street that she recorded it on her mobile phone. And now the gym could be in trouble.

A song containing the word “f---” 26 times has been blared onto the street by a Camberwell gym, upsetting some passers-by.

A speaker outside Anytime Fitness was playing I Love It, by Kanye West and Lil Pump, when Hani Little walked past.

Ms Little recorded a video on her phone as the song, which contains sexually explicit language — including the line ‘you’re such a f-----’ ho, I love it” repeatedly — and other swear words, played.

She said she was appalled and complained to the gym.

“They said it was a club issue and I need to speak to the manager each time a song is played,” Ms Little said.

“Playing that offensive music in a public area is interfering with my reasonable use and enjoyment of the area.”

Ms Little said the gym had been playing explicit music within earshot of the passing public since late last year.

Boroondara Council city planning director Shiran Wickramasinghe said the gym’s planning permit prevented it from playing amplified music outside the store.

“This will now be investigated,” he said.

But he said the federal and state governments shared responsibility for regulating lyrical content of the songs played.

“Victoria Police are responsible for investigating complaints regarding potentially offensive language in music lyrics,” he said.

When contacted by Leader,Camberwell Anytime Fitness club manager Rebecca Nelson said the gym was “no longer playing any music externally”.

A similar complaint was made in May last year after Anytime Fitness Glen Waverley played offensive music on an outside speaker, despite not having a permit for an external public address system.

Monash Mayor Shane McCluskey said the council had requested the gym disconnect the PA.

The gym’s assistant manager told officers content filters were usually in place to stop explicit songs being played.
