They are two of the most popular shopping meccas in Melbourne. And finally, with coronavirus numbers dropping, traders at the two commercial hubs are set to reopen.

Struggling traders across Melbourne’s inner east — especially at Chadstone shopping centre and Chapel St — are seeing “renewed confidence” as shops begin to open their doors after weeks of inaction caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Vicinity Centres managing director Grant Kelley, which owns Chadstone shopping centre, said the company was “seeing some signs of recovery” and was “committed to providing each of our retailers with the opportunity and support to reopen safely”.

“Around Australia in our centres, some retailers, large and small, national brands and food operators who voluntarily closed their doors are now reopening their stores,” he said.

“Approaching what appears to be a likely easing of some restrictions in coming weeks and months, we are keen to help retailers resume trade, safely and as appropriate.”

Chapel Street Precinct Association general manager Chrissie Maus said more businesses were “slowly opening and pivoting their offering” but foot traffic on Chapel St was still down 70 per cent.

“We are begging people to support local traders in Chapel St precinct so their businesses can survive this heartbreaking lockdown period and so the cafes and restaurants you love can be standing after this is over,” she said.

“Our local businesses need your support now more than ever,” she said.

“One way to help restaurants and cafes is to park out the front and they will be happy to bring your food order to your car, or better yet if you live close by why not go for a short walk and collect, that way you get exercise and fresh world-class food as well, win-win.

“Our businesses will be so appreciative of your support and this all can be done safely, while maintaining social distancing.”
