Camberwell residents say they can’t park in their own street because a car hire franchise is using up all the bays.
Burke Rd locals are being forced to leave their vehicles long distances from home because rentals from an Avis car hire franchise more than six streets away are regularly taking up dozens of parking spots. Frustrated resident Richard Mulcahy has had enough.
“It’s an outrage they’re taking residential parking spots,” he said.
He said it’s become a matter of safety, with his heavily pregnant daughter-in-law and her two-year-old toddler forced to park a long way from their home and walk along the busy thoroughfare.
Mr Mulcahy said he had previously approached the franchise about the issue.
“The Avis franchisee has shown callous disregard for the interests of their neighbours,” he said.
“They should not be able to establish a commercial business with multiple cars and trucks without the land to accommodate them.”
City Planning director Shiran Wickramasinghe said the council was investigating any breach of Avis’ planning permit.
“Planning permits will generally require vehicles under the control of the operator to be parked on site,” he said.
Mr Wickramasinghe said one-hour parking limits were in place between Toorak Rd and midway to Anderson Rd. Extra parking restrictions were in place during peak hour. “Beyond this point and extending to Anderson Rd, parking is unrestricted,” he said.
Mr Mulcahy said the Avis state manager had contacted him after The Leader.
Avis car rentals did not respond to a request for comment.
