Burgers are about to be dished out again from a historic Prahran building which has been empty for several years.

Burgertory will open its fifth Melbourne store, potentially in the next fortnight, at the former home of Hungry Jacks at 344 Chapel St.

The burger chain was established in 2017 and already has stores in Braybrook, Kensington, Footscray and Airport West.

Leader understands management from Braybrook are also involved in establishing the Prahran store.

The burger chain shared a picture of the historic building on its Instagram page when it got the keys for the site in late July.

The building, on the corner of Chapel St and Malvern Rd, is heritage listed and is believed to have been empty for four years, with Hungry Jacks’ signage still visible three months ago.

“After months of looking we finally decided that the iconic building on the corner of Chapel St and Malvern Rd is the perfect fit for some iconic burgers,” Burgertory wrote.

“We look forward to being a part of Prahran, and can’t wait to serve you what we call our sinfully delicious burgers.”

Chapel Street Precinct general manager Chrissie Maus said the store hoped to open for takeaway trading within two weeks.

Ms Maus said Burgertory’s arrival would boost the precinct as it looked to recover from the coronavirus outbreak.

“The ‘road out’ is now in sight and Burgertory moving into one of our iconic corners is just further proof there is blue sky on the horizon for our high street economy,” she said.

Ms Maus said five new businesses had also opened in the precinct in the past fortnight.

Meanwhile, a short walk away, an old ramen bar is set to be transformed into a Mediterranean eatery.

Real estate agency Fitzroys leased the space at 151 Commercial Rd to an unknown operator for $55,000 per year for up to eight years.

Fitzroys agent Lewis Waddell said he felt the area was an emerging a food and beverage hub.

“Even during the lockdown period, the growing demand for delivery services such as UberEats and Deliveroo in locations with medium and high-density residential catchments such as this offers an attractive consumer catchment,” he said.
