Saddened by the closure of a small shopping strip’s longstanding milk bar, Box Hill North locals are showing their love for a nearby business.
Customers are rallying around beloved Trawool Bakery, sharing their recommendations for the independent bakery’s goodies and encouraging others to make it their go-to spot for bread and treats.
The small business has been at 33 Trawool St in Box Hill North for 23 years, run by Tien Nguyen and her husband, who make the large assortment of goods themselves.
The bakery sells more than 30 different baked products, and has just begun offering the services the area has lost with the disappearance of Trawool Milk Bar.
The milk bar shut its doors for the last time in August after running at 27 Trawool St for more than 50 years, with its owners saying the business was no longer profitable.
Ms Nguyen said nearby Box Hill North residents used to walk to the milk bar for paper and milk, including elderly people who couldn’t drive, and had been having to walk much further for the necessities since the store’s closure.
To fill the gap, the bakery now also offers newspaper, ice creams, milk, chocolate, lolly bags and drinks.
“Children coming back from school need icy poles,” Ms Nguyen said.
But the main appeal of Trawool Bakery is still its delicious collection of baked goods, which includes fresh bread, pies, sausage rolls and a huge assortment of cakes and sweet treats.
Think chocolate croissants, apple scrolls, jam doughnuts, lamingtons, cherry slice, hedgehog, custard tarts, brownies and more.
Ms Nguyen said at Easter time her hot cross buns were “very famous” in area, as were her special fruit mince tarts at Christmas.
She said her and her husband made everything fresh, and only used natural ingredients.
“We just love cooking,” she said. “We cook with all of our hearts.”
Ms Nguyen said business at the bakery had been up and down over the years, but the couple loved their work.

“And the locals around here are very nice people.”
She said the bakery received good support from nearby schools and had a supportive landlord.
Since the closure of Trawool Milk Bar, customers have taken to Facebook to urge others to shop at the bakery.
But the jury is still out on its best product, with customers saying Trawool Bakery sells “the best” cheese and bacon rolls, chocolate croissants, bread rolls and vegetable pasties.
The bakery is open from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and from 7.30am to 4pm on Saturdays.
