Camberwell Primary School may still get its wish to have Reserve Rd closed during school hours despite Boroondara Council’s controversial decision to throw out plans for a public park.
The council voted last week to knock back a community-lead push to build Camberwell Green, a public park that would replace the council’s Reserve Rd carpark.
The park would have required the permanent closure of the central section of Reserve Rd, which runs between Camberwell Primary’s senior and junior campuses.
Camberwell Primary School principal Janet Gale had previously backed plans to close the road during school hours, which she said posed a safety risk to students who were forced to cross it during the day to attend classes.
School council president Stuart Lindsay said after last week’s decision on the park it was important the council still considered closing the road.
“Camberwell Primary School’s council representatives reiterated (at the meeting) the need to close Reserve Rd, either fully or during school hours, for the safety of staff and teachers, and for the safety and wellbeing of children as young as five years old,” he said.

Boroondara spokesman Daniel Freer said a traffic report was being finalised and the council would consult with the school once it was completed.
“(The) council expects this report to be finalised in December. The findings of the report will then be assessed and discussed with Camberwell Primary School in the new year,” he said.
A report would then be submitted to councillors for a decision, he said.
