Haircut Mornington: Main St barbers offer quickest way to get a trim

Lockdown has ended for the hair and beauty industry and a suprising customer has led the charge to the salon.

After waiting 17 weeks for a hair cut, another hour was no bother for Ben Coveney.

He joined the queue outside Lawson’s Barber, at the beach end of Main St, about 11.30am on Monday

“It’s been months since my last haircut,” he said.

“My 18 year old daughter has been putting hair clips in it to keep it back and has been egging me on to try a man bun.”

The Mornington man said his wife Charlene had checked waiting times at other barbers in the street before directing him to the shorter queue at Lawsons.

“He was super keen,” Mrs Coveney said.

“I haven’t even thought about my hair.”

Next to him in the queue, Niall Carroll was hoping for a spruce up before celebrating his birthday on Tuesday.

“I’ll be 51. Can’t mark another year with my hair like this,” he said.

“My last haircut was 11 weeks ago. I’ve been wearing my cap a lot.”

Up the street at Mens on Main there were six men waiting outside and all four chairs inside were occupied.

The barbers found a line of 20 blokes waiting when they arrived at 8.20am and the stream of customers had continued throughout the morning.

“I’ve been here an hour now,” Peter Twining said.

“My last hair cut was in May. I can’t believe how much shampoo I’m using now my hair is longer.”

The Tyabb man said the new 25km radius meant he could “legally” travel for the trim.

Mt Martha man Ed Caldwell said he had been waiting for 40 minutes but was happy to support his regular barber.

“I’m a loyal customer. I always come here,” he said.

Cedric Deutrom and Bryan O’Donnell relaxed in chairs lined up outside the shop.

Instead of passing the time with magazines they indulged in some good-natured banter about the upcoming AFL Grand Final.

Mr Deutrom, a Richmond fan, said he had waited 11 weeks for his lockdown chop.

“I don’t mind waiting a bit longer. I’m sitting here next to a Geelong fan talking footy. We might sing soon! Oh wait, I don’t think that’s allowed.”

Mr Deutrom said he would rather be at work than waiting for a haircut.

“But of course Dictator Dan has put a stop to that too. I’m still not allowed to re-open my auto parts business in Hallam yet.”

Mr O’Donnell said he was disappointed he wouldn’t get the chance to cheer the Cats on Saturday, or even watch the game with all his mates.

“My hair will look good though,” he said.
