Teens brawl at Shepparton 'super' school

Video footage has captured the latest violent attack at Shepparton’s ‘super’ school just three days after it officially opened.

One teen can be seen pushing another against a wall before the pair start throwing punches.

Teachers were forced to watch helplessly before the teens, believed to be in Year 7 and 9, were separated.

The video has been circulating since Wednesday.

Police were called to reports of a “potential incident” at the Hawdon St campus about 1.30pm on the same day but a spokeswoman said “no offences were detected”.

The call-out was not related to the fight.

More than $140 million and five years in the making, the Greater Shepparton Secondary College has 2223 students enrolled and officially opened on Monday.

With room for hundreds more, it is expected to be the state’s largest high school campus within a few years.

The school was opened to reverse years of decline in Shepparton public schools.

Of the four schools shut as part of the merger, three — Shepparton High School, Mooroopna Secondary College and McGuire High School — long had year 12 results among the worst in the state.

An Education Department spokesman said the first week at the new school had been a “great success”.

“Overall, student behaviour has been exemplary. Police attended the school on Wednesday as a precautionary measure unrelated to an altercation at the school, but were not required to take any action,” the spokesman said.

The video is the latest violent incident to have marred the school in previous years including accusations of racism and an emergency lockdown triggered when a student came to school with a replica gun.

There are security guards employed by Greater Shepparton Secondary College at the car park entrance pending the installation of a remote-controlled security gate.

Last week executive principal Barbara O’Brien admitted the past few years had been challenging but teachers would make it clear they had “greater expectations for students”.

“Shepparton will benefit from this,” she said.
