Boat rescue in Johanna

Dramatic footage has shown the police air wing rescuing a couple stuck at sea on a boat.

Emergency services were called to Johanna, west of Cape Otway, about 8.30pm on Thursday night.

The call to rescue two people was made by the boat’s skipper, who told emergency services the boat was 750 metres off the shore but the engine would not start and failed to securely anchor the vessel.

The Air Wing crew were called to the scene as it was believed the boat may roll off before the watercraft would arrive.

A 52-year-old South Australian man and a 52-year-old Bentleigh East woman were rescued from the water by the crew.

They were taken to Apollo Bay to meet police officers.

Neither the man or woman were injured.

Victoria Police are urging boat operators to make sure their vessels are in working order, they have adequate safety equipment and the weather is appropriate before going off to the ocean.

The Water Police Squad is also out this summer patroing local coastal and inland areas to target any anti-social behaviour and illegal activity.
