Police say officers were not believed to be at fault following a horror crash that killed one driver and injured two cops at Strathmerton on Tuesday.
It’s understood a van crashed into a police vehicle at high-speed on the Murray Valley Highway, at the Stokes Road intersection, about 12pm.
The driver and sole occupant of the van, a 60-year-old man from Longford in Tasmania, died at the scene.
Police believe the driver may have failed to give way.
The two male officers, a first constable and detective sergeant from Cobram, received serious injuries.
One officer, aged in his 30s, was flown by air ambulance to the Alfred Hospital and is now in a stable condition.
The other officer, aged in his 60s, was taken to Shepparton Hospital also with serious injuries.
Assistant Commissioner Tony Langdon said the police members were driving to a job when the van collided with them at high-speed.
Mr Langdon urged people to slow down on country roads.
“I just ask that people take note of their driving, the last 46 days we’ve lost some 40 lives … on country roads.
“I would rather you get somewhere two minutes late than not at all.”
Motorists are advised diversions are in place and the scene will remain closed for some time while investigators examine the area.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics attended the scene on Murray Valley Highway in Strathmerton shortly after 12pm on Tuesday and were treating two men for serious injuries.
“The air ambulance has been dispatched,” the spokesman said.
“There are no further details at this time.”
