Batman Ave, Shepparton house fire

A house has been engulfed by flames in the state’s north.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Batman Ave in Shepparton just before 6pm on Tuesday.

No one was home at the time of the incident and there were no injuries.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics were not required.

Fireys left the scene about 7pm but police remained and blocked off the road between Wills and Burke streets.

The fire was contained to the outside of the home on the front porch near a barbecue area.

The owner and landlord of the home, who asked not to have his name published, was unsure what happened.

“I’ve got no idea — I’ve just arrived this morning — I don’t live here,” the owner told the Herald Sun.

“I just have to put up with all this and fix it.

“I’m all right — I just worry about other people.”

The owner said a woman was living in the home for almost 15 years and was a “lovely lady”.

It’s believe the woman stayed in Echuca after the fire broke out.

“She rang me last night and said there’s a fire but said ‘don’t worry it’s not that bad’ and it was dark when she rang me,” he said.

The fire also damaged a power box on the outside of the home and burnt through the plastic roof sheeting.

“Now there’s no power,” the owner said.

“It’s not real bad.

“This is a nice house — I remember building these houses in Melbourne many years ago.”

The owner said it could have been worse.

“No one got hurt and the house is still here,” he said.
