Seven schools have been exposed to positive Covid cases during Shepparton’s alarming outbreak with thousands of teachers, students and family forced to isolate.
So far there are 44 positive cases in the state’s north east as authorties fight to bring the cluster that plunged regional Victoria back into lockdown, under control.
Greater Shepparton Secondary College, Notre Dame College, Mooroopna Primary School, St Brendan’s Primary School, St Mel’s Primary School, Orrvale Primary School and Bourchier Street Primary School are all under stay at home orders.
Bianca Lane, from St Brendan’s Primary School, has been homeschooling her daughter Piper, 7, since Tuesday morning.
Her son, Spencer, 3, is also in daycare so both of her kids have been at home.
“We have to isolate for 14 days until September 3,” Ms Lane said.
“It’s been overwhelming. Luckily I did our grocery shopping on the weekend because I ordered more yesterday and it won’t get here until 7pm on Sunday.”
Ms Lane said her kids didn’t understand why they couldn’t go outside.
“Piper saw someone riding their bike and asked if she could ride hers. I had to tell her we couldn’t because we needed to isolate,” she said.
“Pa also dropped off some cereal at the front door and the kids said they wanted to go with him but obviously couldn’t.
“I am a little bit concerned (about the outbreak) but given we’re isolating we’re probably the safest we can be.
“The information has been confusing about who is, and isn’t, meant to be tested.”
Greater Shepparton Secondary College
No positive cases are yet to emerge from the three campuses which have all been listed as tier one sites.
But more than 2000 students and their household contacts have now been put into lockdown.
“Please be aware the ‘stop and stay’ advice for GSSC families remains current so I thank you for staying at home and keeping the wider community safe,” executive principal Barbara O’Brien said in an update on Sunday.
Remote learning started for students on Tuesday.
Notre Dame College
One student has tested positive to the virus, announced on Sunday night.
The Emmaus and Knight St campuses have now been listed as tier one sites for August 17, 18 and 20.
On Monday morning principal John Cortese said about 150 people had been deemed close contacts of the positive case.
“We will work our way through this and we will be back at Notre very, very soon,” Mr Cortese said.
Mooroopna Primary School
Principal Carla May confirmed a case in the school community on Monday night.
“As a result, Mooroopna Primary School and our Outside School Hours Care, Stepping Stones, and the Early Childhood Service is now closed to all students, staff and community members until further notice. This means no on-site supervision will be available,” she said.
“While the Department of Health (DH) conducts its investigation, staff and students and their household members must isolate at home until further notice.
“Please be aware that we cannot provide information about the person who has tested positive for Covid and I ask that that you respect their privacy.”
St Brendan’s Primary School
One positive case has been linked to the school since the beginning of the outbreak.
The case attended the school between 8.45am and 3.30pm on August 17, 18 and 20 and has since been listed as a tier one site.
“These are challenging times for us all and our thoughts and prayers are with the school community,” principal Paula Stevenson said in a letter to parents.
St Mel’s Primary School
The catholic school was the first to be shutdown.
A spokesperson from Catholic Education Sandhurst confirmed students and staff were sent home after someone from the school community tested positive.
But the school wasn’t listed as a tier one exposure site until Tuesday.
A positive case attended the school on August 18, 19 and 20.
Orrvale Primary School
One case was confirmed in a year five student on Saturday.
The positive case visited the site on August 16, 17 and 18.
Bourchier Street Primary School
One case has been confirmed in the school community.
Despite the case, it has yet to have been listed on the official list of exposure sites.
