Shepparton is home to three breweries and hundreds of different varieties but who stocks the best beer?

We visited Shepparton Brewery, Three Legged Cow Brewing and Wildlife Brewing to find out. Here’s what made the list.

Opened in April 2019, the Shepparton Brewery has something different for every beer-lover.

But that’s no surprise given owners Daina Winch and Matt Milsome are experts in hospitality having owned the The Teller Collective and Fryer Street Food Store.

They said taking on a brewery seemed like the natural next step.

“We thought a brewery would do quite well and we’ve received terrific support,” Daina said.

“At first you could only buy the products on site but that has now grown and you can buy it in some local shops.

“And we’re pleased to see all our cans are designed by local artist, Tank.”

The Shepparton Brewery has nine different varieties — each popular in their own right.

“We’ve got nine different varieties at the moment which people can try,” she said.

“You’ll always have your more popular ones but everyone is different.

“In future we will start looking at doing limited edition beers as well because Matt loves to get creative during the process.

“He doesn’t like making the same beer over and over.”

Daina said her three best beers were the Sheppxico Mexican Lager, Maude St Pale Ale and Victa Lawnmower.

Victa Lawnmower: Had a hard day in the yard or even after work and want just one drink? This is what to get. It’s an easy drinking beer fermented at a lower temperature. A big tick. Contains 4.3 per cent alcohol.

Sheppxico Mexican Lager: Is beer your number one drink of alcohol? If your answer is yes, this beer is a must. It starts off crisp and sweet with a burst of hops at the end.

Maude St Pale Ale: If you needed a beer to match the description of a pale ale, then this is the one. It smells and tastes divine. You’ve got to give it a go.

Jeramy Blight and his mates love a good pale.

But in the past they had to travel to Melbourne to get the variety they enjoyed most which is why they opened Three Legged Cow Brewing three years ago.

They had previously brewed their own beer which became a crowd favourite at parties they hosted and went to.

“People were actually surprised by the taste,” Jeramy said.

“Once word got around about what we were doing, we thought we had something to work with and we finally got our licence in late 2019.

“We sold our first beer from The Food Store in October 2020 and things have been moving really nicely since.”

Since the company was created officially, Jeramy said there had been about several different test batches completed.

Those have included lemon, chocolate vanilla and milk beers.

“The best thing is we can do whatever we want under our own umbrella,” Jeramy said.

Their three main beers — Four Bellowing Donkeys, Elmoorado and Swanky Scarecrow — are their bests.

Elmoorado: A pineapple taste with fragrances of stone fruit. Made from four ingredients, it is an ideal introduction to craft beer. It’s also a beer you can enjoy the whole night.

Four Bellowing Donkeys: Named after the donkeys where the company is located. This is a step up from your usual pale ale because it is sweeter. But still delicious.

Swanky Scarecrow: Want something to eat with your meal? Then this is the place to start — and end. The Golden Ale is extremely easy drinking and doesn’t make you feel full.

James Thomson and Rhys Porter have had “millions of ideas”‘ for businesses while they’ve enjoyed a beer in the shed.

But their best idea was sitting in their hands — a beer.

“We kind of just fell into it,” Rhys said.

“Everything started from us drinking beer. We ended up going down a rabbit hole with all of the ideas we’ve had.”

While they have a shop set up in Shepparton, they don’t see it as a bar.

“It’s a place where people can come and learn about beer,” James said.

“It’s different to what other places might offer but our customers are starting to understand it.”

The boys have two standard beers which are always available — their Session Ale and Dry Lager.

But they’ve also created a number of limited editions which can difficult to get your hands on.

Here’s how they taste.

Session Ale: Brewed to the boys tastebuds and for those who like a beer easy to knock back. Their website defines it as “the perfect balance of something a little crafty but still approachable and built for the sesh”.

Dry Lager: A smooth beer which is perfect at any time but especially during the warmer months. The boys say it takes older drinkers back to their youth.
