A Shepparton eyesore, linked to a former disgraced councillor, has been labelled a “danger” by council.

The Shepparton Hotel, on the corner of High and Wyndham streets, suffered extensive damage in December 2007 when a fire started on the second floor.

It has been left to sit empty since.

Greater Shepparton City Council’s director of sustainable development Geraldine Christou said officers had deemed the building as unsafe.

She said council had received complaints from the public after bricks were reportedly removed from the hotel.

“During an inspection a view was formed that the building at the property posed a danger to life and to property, in that demolition and removal of internal brick walls throughout the building had compromised the building,” Ms Christou said.

“Council has a duty of care to take action, and accordingly an emergency order was issued requiring works to be undertaken to ameliorate the danger.

“In order to reduce the danger to pedestrians closure of the footpath was required until the remedial works are complete.”

Documents obtained by The Goulburn Valley News reveal disgraced councillor Milvan Muto, who was jailed for eight months in 2014 for attempting to pervert the course of justice, ceased his involvement as a director of the company in August 2019.

The hotel was registered under Mr Muto’s name in 2002.

Businesses who spoke to The Goulburn Valley News anonymously said the building was a disgrace.

They described it as “ugly and horrible”.

The Shepparton Hotel is listed under Greater Shepparton City Council’s heritage overlay.

The footpath surrounding the building is fenced off with works expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
