Illegal rubbish dumpers, using former flood collection sites to trash Mooroopna, have left residents and the local council tearing their hair out.

Following the devastating floods in the region in October 2022, the Greater Shepparton council created temporary places for people to dispose of flood waste.

However, since closing those sites, some people are continuing to trash the areas with unwanted junk.

In a statement, the council said the dumping of illegal rubbish was “unsightly and dangerous” as it could become a health and safety issue.

Mooroopna local Ellen Lines has been seeing people using the scout hall site day and night as a local dumping ground.

“It is a disgrace to our community,” she posted on Facebook.

Others detailed some of the rubbish they’d seen being dumped.

“I literally saw a guy in a ute with a recliner tied with a strap ehind it, dragging it along Echuca Rd, bumping up and down the road, fabric going everywhere, then dumping it at the Scout Hall,” Laura Stevens wrote.

“Serious with I had videoed it.”

The dumping of rubbish on any of temporary flood waste collection sites is now considered illegal.

Many locals believe more needs to be done to catch and prevent illegal rubbish dumpers by installing cameras in the areas.

“(It’s) disgusting,” Ms Stevens posted on Facebook.

“It’s no longer just flood waste, needs to have a cemera installed there to stop it.

“Surely if you can drive there you can go to the tip instead.”

The Greater Shepparton Council is urging residents to dispose of their rubbish at the local tip, which can be done for flood-damaged items free-of-charge until March 2.
