Ex-Mooroopna Primary School staffer Daniel Gommers faces child abuse material charge

A Victorian country town has been rocked after it was revealed a former primary school staffer was allegedly caught with child abuse material.

Daniel Gommers faces a child abuse material related charge at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court.

A country Victorian community has been rocked by allegations that a former primary school staffer was busted with child abuse material.

Daniel Gommers, an ex-Education Support worker at Mooroopna Primary School in the state’s north, has been charged with a child abuse material related offence.

In a letter to parents from the school seen by the Herald Sun principal Karen Goodwin said the news was “difficult to share” and that there was “no information to suggest the charge relates to any current or former students”.

“Whilst this charge does not relate to any students, I encourage you to have regular conversations with your child about personal safety,” Ms Goodwin wrote.

“We will update you when we are able to. In the meantime, we will continue to work closely with the Department of Education to ensure all appropriate steps are taken, with child safety and wellbeing our paramount concern.”

Former Mooroopna Primary School staff member Daniel Gommers has been charged with a matter relating to child abuse material.

As a result of the charge Mr Gommers is “currently not permitted to work in any Victorian school.”

Mr Gommers previously appeared at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing on May 26.

He will return to court for committal mention later this year.

A Department of Education spokesman said the safety and wellbeing of students was always its highest priority.

“As soon as the school was notified of the charge, which does not relate to any current or former student, they took all necessary immediate child safety steps,” he said.

“We will continue to work with the school to ensure full support is available to the school community.”
