Court: Lennie Hayes-Green denied bail for alleged dangerous driving, theft

A man who was pursued by police and the Air Wing in the state’s north is facing a raft of charges including theft of motor vehicles and dangerous driving.

A Mooroopna man is accused of a wild four-day crime spree across the north of the state where he allegedly stole valuables including cars and a diamond ring

Lennie Hayes-Green, 19, appeared in Shepparton Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to apply for bail on a stack of theft-related charges. unlawful assault and driving erratically placing a person in danger of death.

Mr Green was arrested on Sunday by police with the help of Air Wing after reports of a ute driving erratically and on the wrong side of the road in Mooroopna.

Detective Senior Constable Scott Begbie told the court Mr Hayes-Green presented an unacceptable risk to the community and believed he would fail to answer bail

He said the accused made admissions to all matters, except stealing the laptop and that he was present when the vehicle was set on fire, when interviewed and told police he was using methalymphetamine daily.

Senior Constable Begbie said Mr Hayes-Green was previously granted bail by police for offences from November last year to January including theft, theft of motor vehicles and dangerous driving offences.

Defence lawyer Ian Michaelson said Mr Hayes-Green was a young Indigenous man with an intellectual disability who had never been involved in the Court Integrated Services Program (CISP) before.

“He should be given this one opportunity to try bail with the support program,” he said.

Magistrate Simon Zebrowski said he took “no pleasure” in denying Mr Hayes-Green bail as there were enormous concerns about the over-representation of Indigenous men in custody.

“If I let him out now with my fingers crossed everything will be all right on CISP I would be abdicating my responsibility to the community,” he said.

Mr Hayes-Green was remanded in custody and will return to court on March 17.
