If there’s one thing working from home has taught us, it’s that we really don’t need most of what we have lying around our homes.
And with many people out of work or living on reduced incomes because of the global coronavirus pandemic, and Christmas around the corner, there’s no better time to turn your clutter into cash.
This year’s Garage Sale Trail will be held on November 21 and 22, with hundreds Victorians set to turn their ‘trash’ into someone else’s treasure.
While socially-distanced garage sales will be on offer, this year’s national event will also be held online giving more people the chance to spruik their wares to a larger audience.
Danielle Goodwin, founder and director of Australia’s top luxury vintage store Hawkeye Vintage, said selling online had already proved successful for her South Yarra boutique.
“I love selling virtually,” Ms Goodwin said.
“We began selling online via Instagram stories about a year ago and have had great success.
“Hosting virtual sales means that we can reach a much wider group of people, no matter their location, and all from the comfort of their homes.”
This year sellers who register to be part of the Garage Sale Trail can live stream their items from their preferred social media channel.
The listing will appear on the Garage Sale Trail sales map, which goes out to more than 400,000 people.
On the day, you just need to switch your profile to public and show people what you have on offer.
Buyers can purchase items by sending the seller a direct message and making a bank transfer.
Aside from a possible cash injection ahead of the silly season, the Garage Sale Trail also helps reduce waste, with more than two million items expected to be listed and diverted from landfill this year.
Co-founder Andrew Valder said the mega sale event was the perfect opportunity to clean up and clear out.
“The seller makes some money, the buyer gets a bargain, the earth gets a breather. Everybody wins,” he said.
Shoppers can map out which sales they’d like to visit — physically or virtually — by searching the map on the website and creating their own trail.
