A man who came to Australia as a refugee from Sierra Leone has been jailed for sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl.
Ensah Rogers, 27, was found guilty by a jury of seven charges of sexual assault of a child under 16, one of sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16 and another of sexual penetration of a child in 2019.
He appeared for sentencing before Judge Pardeep Tiwana in the County Court on Friday where he was jailed for nine years.
Judge Tiwana said the victim felt traumatized and struggled with ongoing nightmares as a result of Rogers actions that were purely for his sexual gratification.
He said the child wakes up in a state of panic at the sound of noise and is dealing with a range of emotions, including feeling anxious, sad and angry.
In her victim impact statement, her mother said Rogers’ horrendous act have had a devastating impact on her life, and that of her children.
“As a parent of a victim of child abuse, it feels like emotionally you pay and pay over even though you did nothing to deserve it,” she said.
She said there was a feeling of gut-wrenching loneliness that literally no one could understand because the experience was solitary.
Judge Tiwana said sexual offending against children was unquestionably serious and abhorrent, and courts as well as Parliament have taken a strong view of it over the years.
Rogers offending against an extremely young and vulnerable child was not an isolated incident and that he had time to reflect on his behaviour after each incident.
Born in the African nation of Sierra Leone, Rogers moved to Perth then on to Melbourne as a refugee and was on the cusp of obtaining his builder’s license when his offending came to light.
He will serve a minimum non parole of five years and six month.
