A diver having a Friday afternoon dip has prompted a major emergency services response after an onlooker called triple-0 with reports of a struggling swimmer.
Paramedics and police were called to Elwood Beach on Head St about 3.15pm.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics responded to “reports of a water incident” about 3.15pm but their services were not required.
A later comment from Victoria Police revealed the swimmer “turned out to be a diver who was not struggling”.
Elwood Bathers staff said they watched the incident unfold on the Elwood foreshore.
“There were police, a boat in the water and even a helicopter looking for him,” waitress Danielle said.
“Everyone was watching from the window.
“Apparently it was nothing - the swimmer washed up in St Kilda and went home. He was fine.”
According to diving websites, the Point Ormond Reef is a popular spot off Elwood Beach.
DiveDB calls the reef a “snorkelling and diving adventure” in Port Phillip Bay.
The reef is best accessed by walking and then swimming from the shore.
Near the reef, there is a portable watercraft prohibited zone, meaning jetskiing and similar activities are banned.
