A former Monash gym — which has been trashed, broken into and covered in graffiti — is set to make way for a housing development.
The Ferntree Gully Rd block is expected to pull in plenty of interest from developers with a medium-density housing estate consisting of townhouses considered a likely outcome for the site.
Colliers International agents are hunting for a buyer for the 15,869 sqm Wheelers Hill property, with relevant permits already in place.
A mixed-use development could be an option for the block which also has frontage on Jells Rd.
When the Monash Leader visited the site in 2017, there were empty beer bottles, graffiti-covered walls, mounds of rubbish and fixtures strewn across the floor.
It appeared people had been using it as a place to sleep and drink.
The site used to home to a Lifestyle Fitness gym, which closed almost four years ago.
According to a listing on commercialrealestate.com.au, the land is in a prominent, elevated position with possible views over Jells Park and other parks and waterways.
The well-established surrounding residential areas feature a median house price of more than $1 million and successful medium density projects in the immediate vicinity, the listing states.

Educational institutions like Monash University’s Clayton campus, Caulfield Grammar and Wesley College are also nearby.
There are plenty of shopping centres within an easy drive from the block including The Glen, Brandon Park and Westfield Knox.
