A $450 million expansion of Westfield Knox will create 8000 jobs and is set to position the area as the top shopping and recreation centre in Melbourne’s east.

Knox Council Mayor Darren Pearce said the expansion would start in 2016 and be opened in stages from 2017.

At last night’s meeting the council welcomed the boost for jobs with the area and Cr Pearce said there would be at least 2000 retail jobs created at the Burwood Highway site.

He said the other jobs would come from construction and development.

As reported in the Leader (August 6, 2013) Knox Westfield had remained tight-lipped about its expansion plans for the site but Knox Cr David Cooper said he understood that Knox was “next cab off the rank” for development by Westfield, which took over management of the centre in 2012.
