WESTFIELD Doncaster is scrapping its slow carpark ticketing system – but customers will have to wait until next Christmas for the car parking woes to be eased.
Construction on a new multi-deck carpark, providing about 840 spaces, is expected to start in January.
However, the shopping giant has not said when the new spaces would be available, other than “before Christmas” in 2016.
In the meantime, the centre is revamping the way customers pay for parking.
Customers will be forced to keep track of when they entered the carpark once licence plate recognition software becomes active on November 16.

Instead of taking a paper ticket upon entry, a camera captures a car’s licence plate and a digital clock will display the time of entry.
In a win for customers frustrated with queuing to get inside the centre’s carparks, Westfield confirmed the boom gates would be removed from all entrances.
People parking longer than three hours will need to enter their licence plate number at a pay station before leaving the centre to ensure the boom gate lifts at the centre’s exits.
To check how much time has elapsed since entry, customers will need to input their licence plate at a pay station, concierge desk or digital directory.
Westfield Doncaster centre manager Charlie Rimmer said fees would remain the same and people staying for less than three hours would not need to pay.
“The introduction of ticketless parking is one way Westfield Doncaster is committed to making the journey smoother for our shoppers,” he said.
The electronic parking system follows the activation of free Wi-Fi at the shopping complex amid a highly competitive major retail market in Melbourne’s east.
