It’ll come as no surprise to anyone in the Vermont Secondary College community to know Preet Patel aced this year’s specialist mathematics exam.

It was Preet’s third perfect score in mathematics. Back in year 10 he took on further maths and last year he studied methods.

In fact, he was so adept at this year’s specialist curriculum he put together a trial examination to help his classmates prepare for their final.

The perfect scores complemented his 50 for chemistry, 47 for physics and 40 for English and went towards an ATAR score of 99.9.

Preet, who competed at the International Mathematical Olympiad in the UK in July, said he was thankful to those who’d fostered his interest in the field.

“I’m grateful to all those who have helped me reach this far, including my amazing family for sparking my interest in maths,” he said.

“And I’m also grateful to the incredible mathematics faculty of Vermont Secondary College for turning that interest into ability.”

Victorian Minister for Education James Merlino said all students could be proud of their final year achievements.

“Thank you to the parents, friends and teachers across the state who have provided encouragement and guidance to help this year’s VCE and VCAL students reach this educational milestone,” Mr Merlino said.

“For some students, this may not be the result you wished for but just remember that your results do not define you. There are many pathways to success including higher education, TAFE, traineeships and full-time work.”
