A rev head who totalled his car during an illegal drag race in Croydon told police love troubles with his girlfriend turned him into a hoon.
Troy Monterosso, 38, of Forest Hill, had been hoping to get out of jail on a community corrections order after serving 59 days’ presetence detention when he faced Ringwood Magistrates’ Court via video link on Tuesday.
Court documents describe how police spotted Monterosso and another unknown driver revving their car engines while stopped at traffic lights at the intersection of Exeter and Whitehorse roads about 9.30pm on May 17.
Both drivers floored it when the light turned green, reaching speeds of more than 140km/h as they ploughed through 80km/h and 50km/h speed zones and dodged other road users, according to the documents.
Police turned on their lights and sirens but Monterosso refused to pull over and in his haste to get away hit the kerb of a service lane, blew out three of his tyres and smashed the front and undercarriage of his car.
He then took off on foot but left his wallet and licence in the wrecked car, handing himself into police a week later,, the court heard.
During his police interview Monterosso blamed his behaviour on problems he was having with his girlfriend at the time.
Police also found the drugs ice and cannabis in his abandoned car, the court documents noted.
Magistrate Jan Maclean sentenced Monterosso to four months’ jail and a 12-month community corrections order, despite his lawyer’s request to release him on time served.
Ms Maclean also fined Monterosso $1000 and made orders against his licence.
