A MEMORIAL has been set up outside Box Hill Hospital to remember surgeon Patrick Pritzwald-Stegmann.

Mr Pritzwald-Stegmann, 41, died last night at The Alfred hospital, following an alleged assault at Box Hill Hospital on May 30, which left him fighting for his life.

A temporary memorial has been set up outside the hospital entrance and the community is encouraged to leave floral tributes or messages over the next few days.

Eastern Health chief executive adjunct professor David Plunkett said Mr Pritzwald-Stegmann was not only a colleague, but a friend, to many Eastern Health staff members.

“Patrick was a respected and admired member of the senior medical staff at Eastern Health and a cardiothoracic surgeon at a number of hospitals in Melbourne, including Box Hill Hospital, Epworth Eastern, Austin Hospital and Northern Hospital,” Professor Plunkett said.

“Patrick was a passionate patient advocate, a generous teacher and had particular skill in thoracic surgery.

“His work was truly outstanding and his commitment and dedication will be sorely missed by his colleagues, friends and patients.

“Patrick not only leaves a lasting legacy as a surgeon but as a decent and genuine human being dedicated to the wellbeing of others.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Patrick’s family at this time of unbearable loss.

“We will continue to offer them whatever support they need.

“We would also like to thank our staff and colleagues at The Alfred for the care provided to Patrick.”

Mr Pritzwald-Stegmann, a husband and father to two young daughters, fell to the ground after allegedly being hit in the head.

Police charged Mill Park man Joseph Esmaili with intentionally causing injury.

Victoria Police will now wait for the results of a post-mortem before reviewing the charge.
