A car thief and his mate were busted with a prostitute at a Burwood East hotel room and fined for breaching social distancing protocols.

Troy Maiden, 37, of Boronia, faced the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on May 12 where he pleaded guilty to a string of car thefts across Melbourne’s east.

Court documents described how police spotted Maiden leaving a Burwood Highway hotel room on April 5 in a stolen car and pulled him over.

They found the drugs ice and cannabis in his pockets, the documents noted, and when police raided the room he’d just left they found his mate inside with a prostitute.

Maiden and the other two people were fined for breaching coronavirus social distancing restrictions.

Maiden was also forced to face the music for the stolen car, as well as three others he admitted to stealing from homes in Wantirna, Box Hill North, Glen Waverley and Vermont over four weeks between early March and April, when he pleaded guilty earlier this week.

Maiden’s extensive criminal history included 25 pages of prior charges for offences including burglary, theft and obtaining property by deception, according to the documents.

He also pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, using stolen bank cards to make fraudulent purchases and the theft of a car and trailer from Sale in 2018.

Police noted in the court documents Maiden had shown a “complete disregard” for his bail conditions.

“The accused is a serious risk to the safety of the community, not only through his continued offending but also his driving while unlicensed, being drug affected and also breaching the provisions of the COVID-19 pandemic,” they wrote in the court documents.

Magistrate David Starvaggi sentenced Maiden to two months’ jail, with 37 days’ presentence detention declared time served.

He also disqualified Maiden from driving for two months.
