A BAKLAVA doughnut has hit little Athens in Oakleigh and people are gearing up to take their first bite.
The bakladough delicacy coated with cinnamon, walnut icing and baklava crunch, can be found at The Oakleigh Doughnut Co which opened today in Portman St.
Brothers Yani and Nic Kabylakis opened the business to serve up new-aged doughnuts with a classic twist.
Yani said their shop was a true testament to their childhood memories.
“We have really fond memories of eating our grandmother’s freshly made sweets, so that’s the inspiration behind our business,” Mr Kabylakis said.
He said they were born and raised in Oakleigh and were excited to share their treats with the community.
“Nic and I come from a speciality coffee background and we wanted to create something to go with our yummy Five Senses coffee.”
He said their doughnut flavours were a play on traditional cultural desserts.
“We have the doughloumba, a reinvented classic touloumba recipe, which is golden fried and soaked in sugar syrup.”
“There’s also the galakdough which is play-up on the traditional Greek sweet galaktoboureko.”
Mr Kabylakis said their artisan doughnuts were handcrafted and made fresh on site.
“We take pride in our doughnuts and we’re offering something unique to locals.”
“The magic really happens in our doughnut lab and we want to keep creating new flavours and recipes for the Oakleigh community.”
