A DRIVER managed to continue sleeping while his car rolled through an intersection and crashed into another car — in the middle of the day.

This was just one of the shocking incidents Nunawading highway patrol responded to last week.

BOX HILL NORTH

A motorist has caused early morning carnage on a major Whitehorse Rd.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said a Holden Captiva wagon was being driven south along Elgar Rd at 3.50am on Sunday, July 15, when the driver lost control and hit a power pole, ripping one of the front wheels of the car.

But that wasn’t enough to deter the driver, who continued on for another 50m before hitting a tree and then another power pole.

Police found the driver still at the scene.

Police are awaiting the results of a blood test.

NUNAWADING

Police found a man asleep at the wheel of his car after witnesses saw a slow motion crash in the middle of the day.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said witnesses saw a car slowly drive through the intersection of Kendall St and Tortoise Ave in Nunawading at midday on Saturday, July 14. The vehicle then slowly ran into a parked car.

Police were called to the scene and found the driver, a 43-year-old man from Nunawading, asleep at the wheel.

He is expected to front a Magistrates’ Court at a later date

MITCHAM

Burglars who trashed a house and stole a luxury car led police on a dangerous pursuit up and down the Eastern Freeway before escaping.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said a group of offenders broke into a house on Mulsanne Way in Donvale at midday last Tuesday.

After ransacking the house, the offenders stole a BMW sedan, which was later seen by members of the Nunawading highway patrol with a silver Holden Astra which had covered numberplates.

Police followed the vehicles before a helicopter took over the chase.

At the end of the freeway, the offenders turned around and dumped the BMW near the exit ramp to the Chandler Highway.

The offenders continued in the Astra, which at one stage did a 360 before the driver regained control.

Police lost sight of the vehicle in Preston.

VERMONT

A motorist has broken one of the cardinal road rules: Always stop to offer assistance and swap details after a crash.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said a Toyota Corolla had stopped at the lights at the intersection of Canterbury and Mitcham roads at 3.40pm on Tuesday, July 17 when a Honda Jazz drove into its rear.

The driver of the Camry, a 22-year-old Ringwood North woman, drove through the intersection and pulled over to the side of the road.

The driver of the Jazz followed through the intersection but failed to stop.

The driver of the Camry gave chase and was able to get a picture of the Honda Jazz’s licence plate.

The driver of the Camry was later treated for back and neck pain. Police are investigating.
