Two Whitehorse schools are a step closer to being transformed after getting millions of dollars in election promises from opposing parties.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined Box Hill state Labor MP Paul Hamer to promise a $13.53m STEM Centre for Orchard Grove Primary School in Blackburn South on Wednesday, if the government is re-elected in November.

The school has been pushing for upgrades for about five years, with some of its existing buildings built about 50 years ago and still used by students.

Mr Andrews said the new centre will boast facilities for science and food preparation, as well as general purpose classrooms.

“This is one of the biggest redevelopments anywhere in this local area, it’s a big set of new buildings,” he told students and staff.

“You deserve it, you’re worth it, and we’re going to get that done for you.

“This new STEM Centre will help improve the learning experience for students and make a huge difference to teachers at Orchard Grove Primary School.”

Principal Michelle Ogilvie said the school had been “needing this for a long time” to promote the subjects and enhance students’ experiences.

“To have that money and that upgrade would be fantastic for our students and our community,” she said.

Mr Hamer said the announcement was “really significant” and would transform the school.

“The best teachers aren’t able to do the best job in ageing classrooms and out-of-date facilities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Liberals have promised an $8m rebuild of Vermont Primary School if they triumph in the November 26 poll.

The funding will allow for the preparation of a masterplan and the first stage of works including a new central classroom building and administration facilities for staff and teachers.

Forest Hill state Liberal MP and Glen Waverley state election candidate Neil Angus said the school had suffered from major structural issues including loose asbestos, leaking roofs and termites.

“For many years, I have campaigned for an upgrade to the school, both in the parliament and in the community, alongside hardworking members of the VPS school council,” he said.

“I am determined to see Vermont Primary School receive the upgrade it needs.”
