KEW has quickly looked to fill the void left by captain-coach Justin Graham, appointing star batsman Chris Weeks to the dual positions in 2018-19.

Last year’s Sub-District Cricket grand finalist has also landed one of the signings of the off-season, securing Ormond premiership captain Rohan Wight.

The star opening batsman hammered 616 runs to lead the Monders to the 2014-15 flag before captaining North Canberra-Gungahlin in the ACT Premier competition last summer.

Wight has returned to Melbourne, with Kew quick to pounce following the news Graham had accepted an assistant coaching position at Prahran.

Weeks said the club needed reinforcements after the sudden departure of veteran all-rounder Graham, who churned out 1265 runs and 93 wickets across four seasons at Victoria Park.

“We didn’t really target Rohan but then this coaching thing came up for me and I really wanted to spread the load a little bit, give some more responsibility to the players and get someone in that can look after the development side of things,” Weeks said.

Kew has also added 19-year-old English off-spinner Sam Jones from Kent Premier League club Tenterden in England.

“Obviously you’re always looking for ways to improve your playing list and depth around the club but it’s all happened after ‘Jussie’ (Graham) has gone,” Weeks said.

“Obviously we had some needs that we needed to fill as well so we targeted a few areas, especially getting a spinner in.”

Weeks said Kew could still contend for a flag this season despite Graham’s unexpected departure.

“He’s got aspirations, obviously, to coach Premier Cricket so me and the club have been in constant dialogue as to what would happen if that was the case,” he said.

“We didn’t expect it this year but an opportunity present itself so he’s got to take it and we’re extremely happy for him but we’ve got to move on pretty quick because we’ve got the season starting in two months’ time.”

Kew opens its season against Croydon in a two-day game on October 6 at Victoria Park.
